Students listening to Maurice Balle talk about Balle Bros After our first full night of sleep, our group was ready to start our first day of agriculture tours. Our first stop was at Balle Bros where we were welcomed by Maurice Balle, who explained the company practices and showed us around the operation. Balle Bros is the largest vegetable producer in New Zealand. They produce potatoes, onions and carrots as well as wheat and barley as a cover crop. The majority of their company produces potatoes, at 60,000 tons per year. Balle Bros was started by seven brothers, and 18 family members currently work for the company. Since the New Zealand government restricts the use of GMOs, Balle Bros uses special practices to meet these requirements. Although it makes farming a challenge, Maurice Balle, explained that it has helped increase sales. As a whole, the company has 6000-7000 acres of total crop land, owning 60% and leasing 40%. Aerial view of the dairy barn It was an exciting final day in New Zealand. This morning we departed our hotel at 8:30 am for a very impressive robotic dairy. This was the 4th dairy we have seen since we landed here, but it was far different from any of the others because it was much more similar to a North American style of operation. Their animals were confined and fed a ration in a freestall barn that consisted of corn silage, alfalfa silage, grass silage, and a mix of canola, soy hulls, and other ingredients. The cows had mattresses to lay on and all of the floors were covered in rubber. In addition to the robot milkers, they also had automated manure scrapers to rid the barn of the “effluent” or manure as we call it. Farm Stays on North Island - Day 7

Last night we all were split off into groups and had the opportunity to stay on a farm with host families. The following paragraphs describe each groups experience with their host families.     Hattie, Naomi, Katelyn G, and Alana Katelyn, Alana, Naomi, and Hattie stayed the night at Pia and Roger Lampps house and enjoyed a lovely dinner with conversations discussing U.S. politics, particularly Donald Trump, and the various farming operations in the area. The ladies also got to play with Ridge the dog and Frankie the cat. One of the operations discussed was the Tutu Totara rotary dairy that Roger took the girls to in the morning. The dairy operates year round, but has the majority of the herd calves in the spring. Approximately 1,200 cows come through the dairy, but during the winter 150 fall cows calve to provide some income over the winter.
